Cleaning Copper

Cleaning your cookware

A guide to keeping your ProWare cookware as good as new.

After cooking you will need to wait until the pan has cooled down before cleaning. Use a standard detergent and a soft cloth, do not use abrasive cleaners. For stubborn food residues soak the pan in warm soapy water until the marks can be removed with a soft cloth. These pans can be washed in the dishwasher but exposure to the dishwasher powder will accelerate changes in colour of the copper. The copper exterior will naturally change colour over time (see ‘copper tarnishing’ section below). You can purchase copper cleaners which will help restore the colour of the pan. On the pans with the exposed stainless steel interior (the mini-pan & the 16, 18, 20cm saucepans), the stainless steel can discolour slightly if overheated. This ‘heat bloom’ is a bluish colour which can be cleaned away using a stainless steel cleaner. Changes in colour of either the copper or the stainless steel will not affect the performance or service life of the pans.

The exterior of your copper cookware will darken naturally with time. This will in no way affect the performance of the pan, however some people will prefer to keep their pans polished and beautifully shiny at all times. Here are two ways that we would recommend to clean the exterior of your ProWare Copper Tri-Ply and Copper Base pans.

Brasso Method

This is perhaps one of the most common methods. All you will need is some Brasso wadding and a polishing cloth.

Step 1

Clean the pan of any food residue.

Step 2

Rinse the pan under running water.

Step 3

Take some Brasso wadding and rub the outside of the pan evenly & thoroughly.

Step 4

Rinse the Brasso residue from the pan.

Step 5

Polish with a lint free cloth.

Salt and White Vinegar method

This is a good method for polishing pans that have cooked on residue as the salt acts as an abrasive, allowing you to break down any old food or carbon deposits. However as copper is a ‘soft’ metal you have to be careful not to use salt that is too course, a fine table salt is ideal.

Step 1

Clean the pan of any food residue.

Step 2

Rinse the pan under running water.

Step 3

Sprinkle some salt on the outside of the pan

Step 4

Gently pour on some white vinegar, taking care not to rinse the salt off the pan

Step 5

Gently rub the outside of the pan evenly & thoroughly

Step 6

Rinse the residue from the pan

Step 7

Polish with a lint free cloth
